UK Grid takes its impact on the environment very seriously and thus operates a carbon balanced data centre strategy. UK Grid’s Synergy House is one of the first data centres globally to achieve a reduced carbon footprint through carbon neutralisation and aims to be completely carbon neutral by 2010.
UK Grid’s data centre carbon offsetting is achieved by following Carbon Passport’s guidelines and their government approved method of carbon footprint calculation. Carbon Passport offset UK Grid’s carbon footprint by buying credits called Certified Emission Reductions (CERs).CERs help to fund projects in the developing world which reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Examples include wind farms, energy efficiency projects and electricity generation from landfill gas. The UNFCC website provides details of all registered projects.
