Did you know that the average server produces the same emissions as a 15 mpg SUV?

HostGator hosts over 2,200,000 websites on its shared and reseller servers. That means a lot of servers, and a lot of carbon emissions. So we asked ourselves, What can we do to be part of the climate change solution? We took steps to minimize our environmental impact at the office, but still we weren’t satisfied. We then switched to 36% more efficient servers, but still we weren’t satisfied! Read more…

Power by 100% Wind Energy

Our offices and our data centers are all 100% powered by wind energy.

Since generating wind energy on site isn’t feasible, we’re offsetting all of our electricity use with wind-generated Renewable Energy Certificates, which prevent the release of 2,660 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year.

Our employees and our customers were the driving factors behind our decision to go green. This initiative isn’t a marketing ploy; our staff members encourage responsible environmental practices inside the office and practice them outside the office. And, we know that many of our customers feel just as strongly. Read more…

Eco Web Hosting

November 9th, 2009 3 comments

Eco Web Hosting carefully calculate the carbon emissions produced as a result of their web server being on 24 hours a day. They then offset these emissions by planting trees at Ransomwood Business Park in Nottinghamshire, England. As the trees planted are young, they will absorb much more carbon as they grow so in the long term, Eco Web hosting can be a carbon positive company. This model, they say, allows them to have a positive (not just neutral) effect on the environment, as well as avoiding the large costs of solar panels or wind generators, and means they can then pass these savings on to customers.  Read more about their eco credentials here.
